A visit with Mom

I talked with the nurse this morning at Meeker.  Anna is the Nurse Manager in the senior behavioral unit.  I immediately like her a lot.  I asked her how mom was doing and she said, mad, angry, agressive, sarcastic and agitated.  She wants to go home.  This is where I took a really deep breath and my stress level increased as I knew that I was going to see her.

She said that Friday was a really bad day.  Mom refused to eat and refused to drink anything all day.  She also was very combative with the staff.  She would not let any of them touch her.  They also were unable to get her to take any of her meds.  This morning was not good either.  She threw her juice with the cup at the staff and refused to eat or take anything from them.  At one point she sat down in the middle of the floor and pouted.  The nurse had to stop that when mom started scooting across the floor on her butt.

The nurse said that mom was really out of it and they were concerned about her falling.  My mom wanted to walk so Anna went with her.  Again, mom wouldn’t let anyone touch her.  My mom did not want Anna with her but had no choice.  Throughout the entire walk mom was being very sarcastic and mocking the nurse, say “you can’t walk alone…”, “you need help”.  She was flailing her arms around and being very dramatic.  The nurse looked at mom and said “Are you sure you didn’t get your master’s degree in drama because you are really doing a good acting job.  Love a nurse with a sense of humor. 🙂  Mom however didn’t take kindly to that and glared at her however she did stop her mocking.  When they go by the door my mom was banging on it to get out.

When we got to the hospital, Anna met us outside of the unit to chat.  She then let me know the following.

After the walk the nurse got mom to sit in a recliner and gave her a warm blanket.  She slept through the morning activities.  Anna said that when mom woke up she was a different person.  She was calmer and not violent any more.  She still wasn’t happy but it was a step in the right direction.  They finally got her to eat and she ate her entire lunch.  She even gave them a compliment that it was good.  They were also able to give her the first dose of Depakote and Gabapenton.

She does have a bladder infection.  They are waiting for the culture to come back so they can use the correct medication on the infection.  This will help much!

My stress level started to diminish a bit.  She brought us in and woke mom up.  The smile on my mom’s face when she saw me melted my heart.  She hugged me and Jim and held my hand for a while.  She talked and talked.  At one point she even said that this is going to be home for a little while.  Below is today at the hospital.

After being there for about 30 minutes, Sandy Clemons got there with her guitar.  When I told mom she was there the smile came back and she was just so very happy to see her.  Sandy and I sang and played guitar for mom.  She really enjoyed it.  I am so very happy that I got to see her today.  It was good for my soul to be with her.  She did get a little pouty with me when I left but she wasn’t mad.  I did ask her to be nice to the nurses because they are there to help.  She did agree.

Jim took video of us singing with mom.  We will try to get that out to people soon.

Thank you again for your support and please feel free to visit mom if you can.  I will update next week on placement for mom when I have more information.
