A Birthday Visit with Mom

Today we had the chance to spend some time at the hospital with my mom.  I seem to always have a little trepidation when going to see her.  I don’t really know what to expect.  Is she going to be happy, sad or angry?  Is she going to know me?  How will she do with the kids?

I am happy to say that the visit went very well.  She was happy to see us and the hilarity of what comes out of her mouth was very entertaining.  She knew who I was and then I was going to explain that Alex was with us.  I got about half her name out and my mom pointed at Alex and told the nurse, this is Melek.  She then pointed at Cody and said, this is Alex.  She then pointed at Jim and said, here is the dog.

After much laughing we were able to get her to sit down and eat her Dilly Bar.  We let her talk.  Her head was unfortunately in a nighmare for part of the time we were there.  She kept talking about the bees and that she was so scared of them and that we needed to help her get rid of them.  Finally, after awhile I was able to convince her that we were able to get rid of all of the bees.  She was so excited that she put her arms up and yelled, she grabbed Alex and Cody’s hands and kept saying how happy she was that they were gone.  We didn’t hear about the bees for the rest of the visit.

She absolutely loved the cards.  She listened to me read each one to her.  She loved the kitty card from Teri and the music card as well.  Her face lit up when I told her that I had a card from Don and Connie.  Again, thank you to those that sent a card.  It really made her day.  The nurses put the cards up in her room.

I did get a chance to talk to the nurses and mom is doing well.  Mom really likes the nurse that was on tonight.  The nurse said that mom does really well with her because she doesn’t push her and doesn’t tell her what to do.  She gets her to do things by suggestion.  She also calls my mom a princess and gives her hugs.

She talked endlessly and held our hands and walked around the unit.  She told us about the place and not once asked to leave.  At least three times she got to have the excitement that Cody was there to see her as she had forgotten.  Each time he got hugs and she beamed.  We may have commented a time or two about our family dog.  LOL.

The new meds seem to be really doing what they had intended.  They are having difficulty will growing out the culture in her urine and are still ensuring that she is not having any symptoms.  They keep her hydrated and the pain meds she is taking really help stop the pain of the infection.  She also did not complain about her arthritis pain either.  Quite honestly, she was mostly happy and engaged with us.  The conversation was still very confusing for us to follow but we didn’t let her know that.  We were able to get her to not only smile but to laugh and enjoy the day.

My sister in law, Trish, went out to see my mom during the week and had a similar experience for the first part of her visit.  However, she went during the nighttime hours. Trish said that about 7:15 things really changed as the people in the unit started getting more confused and more agitated.  She said that mom and another lady were planning their escape by hiding with Trish to get out.  Trish recommends that if you go during the evening hours to go as early as possible and be ready to leave shortly after 7:00pm.

I have a family call with the doctors tomorrow morning.  On Friday, the Social Worker that is working on my mom’s Elderly Waiver said that they had all the paperwork they needed and hoped to have it done by the end of the day.  My hope is that we will have a solution put in place for permanent placement this week.  Please say another little prayer that we have some resolution with this.

Below are some of the fun pictures we were able to get with mom today.  It was so good that Alex was home from CO this week and Cody was able to come with.  Hope these put a smile on your face.  🙂  We really had a great visit.

We visited on Saturday evening and she was in good spirits while we were there too. She even said she had a good day, to which her favorite nurse agreed! She introduced Doug to everyone several times, but was so proud and happy that he was there. It seems that company has been sitting well with her lately and it’s good to see her smile!
