Even though the call with the nurse earlier this week was a positive one mom is still having some pretty significant issues.
On Wednesday, I spoke with Megan (social worker) and Dr. Simon (psychiatrist). Dr. Simon had an in-person visit with my mom that morning and reviewed her state of mind and records from the weekend. Even though mom is in a better spot, she is having some additional issues. Mom is hallucinating a lot and is clearly not in the present world. Dr. Simon said that he is in her own world.

Mom kept telling him that “they were cold and needed to get warm”. She wasn’t able to tell him who or what “they” were. She is also disrobing a lot in inappropriate places. She is feisty and is difficult during her care times. She is also up in the evening a lot.
At this time Dr. Simon is going to make some minor changes to her meds.
- Continuing at current dosage:
- Minipress
- Vitamin D
- Melatonin
- Depakote 800 (75 MG at dinner)
- When needed – Anti-Psychotic
- Adding
- Zyrtec in the morning
- Increasing
- Gabapentin slightly for calmness
- Possible change
- Scheduled Anti-Psychotic
- Stopped Sinemel for restlessness as it wasn’t really helping
Dr. Simon said that when she takes the Anti-Psychotic that there is an improvement. He is going to up the Gabapentin to see if that helps. If that doesn’t help then he will be calling to get my permission to give mom a scheduled dose of Anti-Psychotic. The reason they do not do this is that it reduces the life span of the individual. I know that when he asks for this permission that I will give it. This is likely the only way that we will be able to move mom out of the hospital and get her into memory care. She is just not in a good place at this time.

They did another UA and are waiting for it to culture to see if she has an infection. At this time she does not. Dr. Simon also put in orders to check her hemoglobin and A1C. This is because she is showing signs of neuropathy and he is concerned these may be off.
Dr. Simon said that we are looking at least another week in the hospital. She needs to be in a way that she can receive care in a more controlled manner. At this time he is not comfortable with releasing her. He will speak with her again on Friday morning over the internet and determine the next steps. Mom will for sure be in over the weekend and likely for most of next week.

Megan is checking with Cokato to ensure that there is still a bed available. We are unable to lock in the bed until we have a discharge plan. We are hopeful that it is still there. If it is not, then she will start looking for another place that mom can go.
We are getting all of the Medical Assistance information set and will be continuing to manage mom’s finances.
Thank you again for all the prayers! It is so much appreciated.
