Gas Pain

One of the major side effects of a gastrectomy is gas pain and discomfort.  I have not been able to figure out all of the pieces to this part of the puzzle but I have found a few things that work.

My number 1 remedy – GasX.  I am not one to promote something specific on a normal basis but this product has not only helped me, it saves me on a regular basis.  There are two different products that I use.  The GasX thin strips are the most important product.  They are a bit spendy but I have found that they are a quick remedy when I have an issue and I am not at home.  One note – this will not fix a dumping situation.  I keep the thin strips in my purse, my work bag, in the glove box of the car and next to my bed.  These dissolve on the tongue and can really help when the uncomfortable gas pain happens at work or out for the evening.  I literally buy 2-3 boxes of these whenever I go to a store that carries them.  I find them in most grocery stores, drug stores or your typical Target or Walmart.  I never leave home without them.  They also have these in pill form or a chewable form.  Both are fine and help but the strips really are my go-to choice.

My other remedy is laying down.  I am very specific about how I lay down.  First of all, I either need a recliner, lots of pillows or a bed that raises.  I no longer lay flat.  I also find that if I lay on my left side it is more helpful than the right side.  We think that this is due to how the intestines curve around but quite honestly, I do not know.  Luckily my work has a quiet room with a couch.  After 15 minutes I am usually feeling way better and can get back to normal life.

Obviously the daily foods that I eat can also help in keeping the gas in check.  Sometimes I may choose to have something that will help me mentally and deal with the side effects later.  It is all about balance.
