The day after the long goodbye

4 a.m. the morning after
The kids are on the plane
A hole remains in my heart
Even though I am numb to the pain

The house smells of beautiful flowers
From friends so very far away
The dark outside is a comfort
It knows I’m not quite ready for the day

Pictures still strewn on tables
Memories still float in the air
Coffee starts to release the fog
As for the day, I start to prepare

I hope she smiled down on us
As we celebrated her spirit that lived
She touched so very many hearts
So much love that she did freely give

I’m waiting for the calm of peace
Fleeting though it is, as of now
Searching for life that feels normal
Honestly, I really I don’t know how

My duties are almost over
Only A few things left to do
I’m ready to step down in this role
Give back my responsibilities too

I’m ready for the daily grind
To replace these sad feelings
Yet, ready to run away from it all
Ready to start my own healing

For my mother and our family
Thank you to all who prayed
Your support has meant so much to us
As Joanne, to rest, we laid

Please understand we may be quiet
As we heal in our own way
We all need time to process her death
As we wait for the light of day

Joanne was a special soul
Her smile infectious and real
Earth light is a little dimmer
As her light, the heavens did steal

Reunited with loved ones in heaven
Cousin Sonny, her folks and our dad
Dancing on the clouds above us
Wishing us to not be sad

She is finally with the one she loves
Jesus, her best friend
I hope he likes her t-shirt
Her love never did end

He will listen to her stories
Of all of us down here
Smiling as she goes on and on
Sending healing through our tears

About this angel in our midst
Thank you lord for blessing us so
Help us say goodbye to her
Help us to let her go

Yes, your labors here on earth with her are done and she IS smiling down on you. You are Blessed and she is Happy.

Grieving is a pilgrimage that can have many different vistas: be patient with yourself along the way.
