Love. It is a thing. It is an emotion, a feeling, a down in the pit of your soul, thing. It is something that many of us strive for and it can break a heart in a mere second. Love. It is the smallest things you do (putting a cold diet Coke in the fridge for the other) and it is also the biggest thing you can do. It is more important than what is happening in the world and more fragile than an egg.

I have a love story. It isn’t princesses and princes or a frog or a ogre. It is two people that had many moments of brokenness and needed each other day in and day out. It is two people that I wish beyond wish, were still here today. Their story is not of perfectness or even what anyone will see in the movies. Their love, was beyond that. It was forever. It was true.

I always wondered, after my father died, how my mother was doing. I don’t know if I asked or if I really understood the depths of her pain. My father was her rock. He was her stability in a world that was not stable. When he was gone, so was her rock.

I found the following in my mother’s things when she died. It has been something that I have thought of for the last couple years. She truly loved my father. I knew that. What I didn’t see, was the hole that was left when he was gone.

It has been hard for me to share this but you should see what my mother did, year in and year out when my father was gone. True love takes many forms. My only hope is that this love has been completed in heaven as they are both watching down on their family.
